Infamously Famous: Cannabis

It might seem like a long time ago now, but marijuana – the popular substance sprung from the cannabis plant – did not always have a particularly good reputation. Though it was well loved among a certain part of the population, the oft-considered stoners and those on the margins of medical wellness, it sat on the side of acceptance. When it came to the mainstream, marijuana was most famously represented by the likes of Jeff Spicoli in movies like Fast Times at Ridgemont High.

But, even for those who might not be interested in the stuff, marijuana and the cannabis plant has lost much of its outsider appeal. In recent years, as the nutritional value of hemp and CBD oil has come to the forefront, more and more people have become curious about how cannabis can help them with the medical issues they’re facing.

With the amount of marijuana sales increasing to $6.7 billion in 2017, it should come as no surprise that the popular cannabis industry is rife for a lot of shake-ups in the future. Given all of the market potential for everything from CBD oil to hemp to cannabis seeds, the reputation for this once-maligned substance is on the up and up, and it’s showing no signs of slowing down.

What About the Cannabis Plant?

It might seem strange that a substance with such a storied history might be sprung from nature, but cannabis is said to have originated in Central Asia and is classified as part of the Cannabaceae family. There are three different species of the plant including cannabis sativa, cannabis ruderalis, and cannabis indica, in addition to the dominant strains of sativa and indica. Certain substances that are derived from the cannabis plant have a prominent place in history, including hemp, which was widely used in Ancient China for making everything from ropes to textiles to treatments. While the leaves, stems, and buds of the marijuana plant can be eaten or brewed, it is believed that the psychoactive effects associated with the drug are a result of the tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) found in the plant. But, while it may be this psychoactive ingredient that has given the plant its reputation, medical marijuana is THC free and is turning the tide for this popular substance.

Varietals of Cannabis

Cannabis Sativa
The cannabis plant alone may be well known, but it’s often only the most informed of cannabis consumers that are aware of the plant’s different species. The most well-known strain is cannabis sativa dominant, which is cross-pollinated and can provide its users with energy and stimulation. While this strain does not contain THC, the pure sativa strain does. Fortunately, it also has stimulating abilities that can help those who are dealing with depression and nausea.

Cannabis Indica
When it comes to medical marijuana, cannabis indica dominant is a go-to strain and its indoor marijuana seeds can assist with issues of insomnia and inflammation. But, pure cannabis indica is even more powerful for ailments and pain and can help provide relief to those looking to its health benefits.

Cannabis Ruderalis
It may be the lesser known of the three cannabis species, but cannabis ruderalis is full of potential given its low concentration of THC. In fact, the most popular export from this strain is the emerging CBD oil, which is fast hitting the market with its myriad health benefits.

A Few Benefits of Cannabis

Given the cannabis plant’s status as a Schedule 1 drug, there is still very little that we know about the extent of its medicinal potential. Fortunately, as the plant continues to become more popular, research will reveal more about its powerful abilities. We do know that cannabis product like cannabidiol (CBD oil) actually work to stimulate the body’s endocannabinoid system, which provides balance and regulation of many bodily functions. In addition to helping to maintain body weight and mood patterns, cannabis can also assist in helping broken bones heal more quickly. Though more studies are required, there is research into its cancer fighting properties that seem to indicate it can assist in fighting, and perhaps even preventing, the disease. In addition, medical marijuana has long been used as a means of coping with the symptoms that go along with chemotherapy treatment for cancer.

What’s in the Cards for Cannabis?

With CBD oil becoming popular for its myriad health benefits and cannabis-produced hemp seeds being considered a superfood, there appears to be limitless potential for this once-marginalized substance. According to the Hemp Business Journal, the booming CBD oil business is set to take in up to $1.8 billion in sales by the time 2020 rolls around. And, with the tide rapidly turning and so many states and countries changing their legislation, there’s no doubt that the market for cannabis will be opening up even more. With so many CBD oil-infused foods already available and celebrities like Snoop Dogg selling their own cannabis brands, there’s really no limit for this very powerful plant that once sat on the sidelines.
